Harold Rogers

Harold Rogers, Representative from Kentucky's 5th District

Hal Rogers (Republican Party) is a member of the U.S. House, representing Kentucky's 5th Congressional District. He assumed office on January 3, 1981. His current term ends on January 3, 2025.

Rogers (Republican Party) ran for re-election to the U.S. House to represent Kentucky's 5th Congressional District. He won in the general election on November 8, 2022.

At the start of the 116th Congress, Rogers was tied for the third-longest active length of service in the U.S. House. His 38 years of service (tied with Chris Smith (R) of New Jersey) made only Don Young (46 years) and Jim Sensenbrenner (40 years) more senior members. Overall, his tenure ranks as the 34th-longest in chamber history.

Rogers chaired the House Appropriations Committee from 2011 to 2016. His personal website says that during this time, he "reduced the size and scope of government by reining in federal spending, conducting rigorous but thoughtful oversight of federal agencies, and restoring fiscal discipline and transparency to our budget process," and that discretionary spending was cut by $126 billion during his tenure.

Rogers was born on December 31, 1937, in Barrier, KY, and attended high school in Montecello, KY. After attending Western Kentucky University from 1956-1957, he went on to earn both his A.B. and LL.B. from the University of Kentucky in 1962 and 1964, respectively. Rogers also served in the Kentucky and North Carolina Army National Guard from 1956-1963.

Prior to his political career, Rogers worked as an attorney in Kentucky's Pulaski and Rockcastle counties.
