Kildee was first elected to the House in 2012. He succeeded his uncle, Dale Kildee (D), who held the seat for 36 years. Kildee was re-elected in 2018.

Following the water crisis in Flint, Michigan, Kildee co-sponsored legislation in 2016 that authorized $170 million in aid for the city.

Kildee was born in Flint, Michigan. He attended the University of Michigan-Flint, but dropped out before getting his degree. He later returned to college and earned his B.S. in 2007. His first elected office was as the Genesee County Commissioner and then the county treasurer. He later co-founded the Center for Community Progress which is a non profit that seeks to recommend policies to local cities and towns throughout the country.
