Joe Manchin III (Democratic Party) is a member of the U.S. Senate from West Virginia. He assumed office on November 15, 2010. His current term ends on January 3, 2025.
Manchin (Democratic Party) is running for re-election to the U.S. Senate to represent West Virginia. He declared candidacy for the 2024 election.
Prior to his election to the U.S. Senate, Manchin served as the governor of West Virginia from 2004 to 2010, as the West Virginia Secretary of State from 2000 to 2004, in the West Virginia State Senate from 1986 to 1996, and in the West Virginia House of Delegates from 1982 to 1986. In 2010, he was chairman of the National Governors Association.
At the start of the 116th Congress, Manchin was the ranking member of the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, and a member of the Senate committees on Armed Services, Appropriations, Veterans' Affairs, and the Joint Select Committee on Solvency of Multiemployer Pension Plans.
Manchin graduated from Farmington High School and then entered West Virginia University on a football scholarship in 1965. He graduated in 1970 with a degree in business administration. He then became involved in several family-owned businesses before launching his political career.
